The planning team of 2009 is excited to unveil a special gift designed in honor of our 20th year celebration…

The Alfred Family Crest

Our new family crest and shield is a symbol used to identify our family's distinctive and pervasive characteristics.  Every aspect of its design is a representation of qualities exhibited throughout our genealogy.

The overall shape is designed to be oval and come to a point with our patriarch, John Alfred, Sr. being the head of that point.  We are aware that our heritage began before John Alfred Sr., however, he has been designated the head of our ancestry as a result of the research completed over the last 19 years.

The primary colors chosen are red and gold.  The red represents our strong blood line that remains common among us all.

The gold emphasizes the brilliance and richness of our heritage.

The lion, on the left side of the shield, signifies our strength, boldness and our innate ability to master and rule the "jungles" of our lives .

The lamb as seen on the right side of the shield, represents our ability to bring peace into every chaotic situation and remain peaceful amidst any negative circumstance.  It also signifies the gentleness and steadfastness of our character.

The agricultural tools represents the physical labor of our family who seeded the ground, replenished the earth as well as nurtured a foundation by which future generations could emerge.

The Bible establishes our core values and beliefs and represents the ministers, pastors and reverends that have been birthed from our family.

The open book in the bottom right hand corner, symbolizes our continued quest for education, thirst for knowledge and the many educators who have served on a variety of levels in academia.

The gold plumes that appear to "burst" from behind the shield dramatically symbolizes the creativity, resilience and diversity unique to our family.

The chain that covers the circumference of the shield, represents the slavery of our forefathers.  At the bottom of the shield, the chain is broken by the mighty oak tree that represents the flourishing generations of Alfreds that now cover the earth and spread across all corners of the world.

For the past 19 years, the Alfred family has gathered to discover and experience the many marvelous facets of its heritage.  In 1979, Patsy Alfred Moore and Algy Alfred became Chairpersons and organized the first reunion.  Subsequently, other pioneers such as Berman Frank, Lela Alfred Pratt, Myrtle Frank McGlory, Minnie Alfred Stringfellow, Freddie Alfred, Isaac Alfred, Jr., Archie D. Frank Readoux, Kathryn Ambres, Ernest Frank and Lizzie Ned helped to pour the foundation by which each reunion could emerge.
The reunion sites have varied primarily between 3 states, Louisiana, Texas and California.  Family members from cities such as Morrows, Lafayette, New Orleans, Houston and Inglewood  have hosted past family gatherings.  Typically, the reunions were held over a weekend during the summer and were filled with family activities and fun.
Despite the ever changing economy and family make-ups, the reunion attendance continues to grow.  With the help of the world wide web, the Alfred family has located and communicated with family members around the nation.  Two decades after its inception, the Alfred Reunion is  stronger than ever with new generational concepts and ideas.
As we prepare to embark upon the 20th year of our celebrations, we recognize the ever-increasing importance of family gatherings.  We understand the need of connectivity, to not only be a part of a family unit but to have a "connection" to that unit.  The greatest gifts that we leave our children is the knowledge of who they are and where they came from.  It is with this thought that the 20th reunion theme is birthed...
"Leaving an inheritance for our children's children"
In 2009, our reunion will begin with a journey back to the birthplace of our lineage as well as the birthplace of our patriarch, John Alfred, Sr.  We will take a chartered trip to Ville Platte, Louisiana for a ceremony held in honor of the Alfreds and our descendants.  In Ville Platte, a tree will be planted in John Alfred's name.  It will represent that place of "connection" and will memorialize the symbol of our strength and roots.   Just imagine 200 years from now, your grandchildren's grandchildren will be able to go to Ville Platte and see where it all began!  That is only a portion of the inheritance we leave for our children's children...over the next year, we need your help to increase the amount of that inheritance...what will you
In this spirit, the planning committee of 2009 embraces and emphasizes a continued commitment to this mission...
leave?
  • To remain consistent in providing quality reunions
  • To rediscover our lineage and share its strength with others
  • To reunite with family members and connect with those we've never known before
